That’s despite the right-back recently putting pen to paper on an improved deal which could keep him at the Amex Stadium until the summer of 2025.

Speaking to Football Insider, former Leeds United man Whelan said: “I think he is destined for a top-six club.

“I have loved Lamptey since he was come onto the scene. He is very exciting, loads of energy, gets forward, gets in good areas, create chances, box-to-box and has a goal in him. He is such an exciting you player.

“When you look at your Man City and Evertons would have right-backs coming to the back end of their careers, Lamptey would give them another option – and let’s not rule out Spurs.

“It is bizarre why Chelsea let him go. He is a very exciting player and even in the small window that we have seen of him, you can tell a lot of big clubs will be looking at him. They will want him because he brings so much.

“He gets into better positions than Wan Bissaka and he gives you more attacking presence.”

The Athletic have claimed Everton, Arsenal and Manchester City and still interested in signing the former Chelsea defender despite the new contract.
