Brighton to receive huge payment from Fifa due to World Cup rule

All the latest news from Brighton and Hove Albion stars at this summer’s Fifa World Cup

Brighton boast a record breaking nine players at this summer's Fifa World Cup.

Albion's Dutch contingent sees Bart Verbruggen, Mats Wieffer and Jan Paul van Hecke all in action for the Netherlands, with Ferdi Kadioglu (Turkey), Maxim De Cuyper (Belgium), Yasin Ayari (Sweden), Pascal Gross (Germany) and Diego Gomez (Paraguay) also representing their nations.

Jason Steele - called-up as the England training goalkeeper - makes it nine but he will not play for Thomas Tuchel's team at the tournament.

Japan winger Kaoru Mitoma would have made it 10 for Brighton but a hamstring injury sustained late in the season against Wolves ruled out the flying winger.

How much will Brighton receive from Fifa?

Fifa operate a Club Benefits Programme where they pay clubs around £3,725 per player per day for releasing their talents to play at the United States, Mexico and Canada World Cup.

Payment runs from the "mandatory release period" until the day after the player's national team is knocked out from the tournament.

There is also a "qualifier payment" where the club receives around £1,757 for each player named in a matchday squad.

Minimum tournament payment is roughly £119,400 per player and the club also gains around £212,500 for each play that reaches the final. Brighton, on this basis, will be hoping their Dutch boys reach the final.

Fifa's Club Benefits Programme totals $355m for this summer's tournament, with the final figures to be confirmed after the tournament.

Highest ever World Cup payment

Brighton will be keeping their fingers crossed that all their players return fully fit and raring to go for the new Premier League season that starts on August 22.

But they are also in line to receive their highest ever pay-out from Fifa - especially if the likes of Verbruggen, Van Hecke, Gross, De Cuyper, Ayari and co go deep into the tournament.

Frustration for Verbruggen

Verbruggen conceded twice in Holland's 2-2 opening draw against Japan.

The Brighton goalkeeper admitted he was frustrated by the display.

"I didn't see the first one at all, and the second one only very late.

"That is indeed frustrating. As a keeper, you want to step up when the team needs you.

“Japan didn't create much—credit to the team for that—but I couldn't stop the chances they did get.

“It's a shame, but we have to move on."

Albion's Dutch contingent are next in action on Saturday against Graham Potter's and Ayari's Sweden.
