Welbeck’s first goal for Brighton set Albion on their way to a first win in seven Premier League matches.

The former Manchester United and Arsenal striker struck to give the visitors a half-time lead before Villa deservedly equalised at the start of the second half through Ezri Konsa.

Solly March quickly restored Brighton’s advantage with a lovely curling effort and in the end Villa ran out of time.

However, Albion were made to sweat in injury time as Tariq Lamptey was sent off for two bookable challenges in quick succession on John McGinn and then Jack Grealish.

Lamptey had not even taken his seat on the bench before Villa were then awarded a penalty, although replays suggested March might have played enough of the ball in a challenge with Trezeguet.

Referee Michael Oliver thought so after taking a look at the pitchside monitor and overturned his initial decision.

But it was Welbeck's performance and goal that really impressed Sidwell.

"It was a great finish," said Sidwell on BT Sport. "This goal from Danny Welbeck was the catalyst of his performance. I thought he was outstanding.

"He drives into the Aston Villa and half and has the coolness and composure to just to dink it over Martinez. It was brilliant.

"You could see Aston Villa really pushing up and but they switched off. Adam Lallana didn't, he knew the pass, just get it into an area where Danny Welbeck can run and then when he gets into the 18 yard box he's then waiting for a decision from the keeper.

"Do I dink it, or go around him and he made the right choice."

Villa played well in an entertaining match and created chances but March's excellent right-footed striker proved vital.

"Brighton did get the winner which again was superb," said Sidwell. "Great play, great build-up and from Brighton and what a finish from Solly March on weaker foot.

"Before that, they did good build up play through the middle. They went out to Gross. It just bobbled up for Solly March but he caught it lovely and into the back of the net.

"It was on his weaker foot and he alters his stride and he gets enough whip to take it past the keeper."
