Brighton dominated possession and had 19 shots but failed to find a way through a grimly determined Burnley outfit.

Neal Maupay, who was dropped for disciplinary reasons at Spurs, returned to the staring line-up and partnered Danny Welbeck, who was handed his first Premier League start.

It's the first time the duo have played together following Welbeck's summer arrival on a free transfer after a frustrating spell at Watford.

Welbeck operated higher up the pitch against Burnley with Maupay playing in a slightly deeper role behind the former Man United striker.

Welbeck had two decent chances in the first half, both of which were well saved by visiting keeper Nick Pope.

Maupay delivered a hard working display but couldn't get the goal he so craved as his efforts on goal were continually blocked by Burnley's resolute defence.

"I liked Neal's performance," said Potter, whose Albion team have now gone eight matches without a top-flight victory on home soil.

"He linked well and worked really hard for us. He got into the box and played with his energy.

"We lost Leo but Neal came in and did well. We tried to get Neal a bit closer to Danny, they linked up okay but it's the first time they have played together and I think they will get better and better.

"We did enough to score but credit to Burnley, they blocked, tackled and got bodies behind the ball and we perhaps lacked a bit of quality in the final third."

Welbeck, 29, was pleased to get his first start in Albion colours and believes the goals will flow once his match fitness improves.

“It’s disappointing, we could have got three points, unfortunately we couldn’t get them," said Welbeck.

“We had a couple of opportunities that we didn’t take. We’ll work on that, we’ll take the point tonight and we’ll move on.

“Nick (Pope) made a good save for the first one. The second one it came over my shoulder. I could have got a better touch but that will come with the match sharpness.

“Minutes are only going to help me. Burnley made it tough for us. We knew the sort of game to expect tonight but we tried our best to get the three points.”
