Gyokeres, 22, joined Brighton in 2018 and spent last season on loan in the German Bundesliga 2 with St Pauli, where he scored seven goals in 28 appearances.

The 6ft 2in Swedish international of Hungarian origin has been linked with another loan move away from the Amex, with Championship outfit Swansea said to be keen as they seek to the fill the void left by Liverpool loanee Rhian Brewster.

Brighton's opening day defeat to Chelsea in the Premier League once again highlighted their need to sign a striker.

But with competition in the transfer market fierce, Albion maybe forced to look within in order to boast their goal tally and Gyokeres is expected to get his chance to impress on Thursday.

Gyokeres has featured just five times for Brighton since his arrival but not yet in the Premier League.

His last outing for the Seagulls came in February 2018 when he replaced Jurgen Locadia in the 81st minute of a 2-1 FA Cup victory against Derby County.

Graham Potter admits no decision on the former IF Brommapojkarna front runner has been made and the Albion head coach wants to see Gyokeres in competitive action.

Tomorrow's match against Portsmouth could be the ideal moment for him.

"We have been impressed with him," said Potter. "He is probably a different type of forward to what we have – big, strong, runs in behind, can finish as well.

"We want to take a real look at him and his qualities before we make any decisions on his next step. He is one we are really interested in.

"It’s (Portsmouth) a possibility because he has done well when he has been with us and played and he has attributes that are really interesting."

Albion are expected to name a strong squad to face Pompey with Jason Steele, Joel Veltman, Dan Burn, Bernardo, Dale Stephens, Davy Propper, Jayson Molumby, Pascal Gross, Alexis Mac Allister, Ali Jahanbakhsh, Max Sanders and Gyokeres all expected to feature.

The winners visit Preston in round three next week.
