Graham Potter uncertain on Viktor Gyokeres future amid Liverpool's Rhian Brewster and Divock Origi speculation

Sweden international Gyokeres was handed a starting role against Pompey and sealed a decent display with well-taken goal on 71 minutes.

Gyokeres joined Bernardo and Alexis Mac Allister in claiming their first Albion goals while Iran international Ali Jahanbakhsh thumped home early in the second period as Brighton outclassed League One opposition.

Gyokeres, 22, joined the Seagulls in 2018 and spent last season on loan in the German Bundesliga 2 with St Pauli, where he scored seven goals in 28 appearances.

The 6ft 2in striker has been linked with another loan move away from the Amex, with Championship outfit Swansea said to be keen as they seek to the fill the void left by Liverpool loanee Rhian Brewster.

Brighton remain keen to add fire power to their attack before the end of the transfer window following the departure of Glenn Murray to Watford.

Albion have expressed their interest in signing Liverpool's Brewster and there's also strong speculation linking them with Brewster's Anfield colleague Divock Origi and Arsenal's pacy forward Folarin Balogun.

Albion head coach Graham Potter is rarely one to discuss transfer speculation but he was keen to praise Gyokeres' Carabao Cup display.

"He has attributes that are different," said Potter. "It is not easy to play up front on his own, that was the role he was asked to do and I thought he kept going and got his reward at the end. He is learning but he still has qualities I think we can use.

"He is one of those where we will keep assessing where he is at and make a decision for him in terms of his development. He has been good in the group and we are pleased with him.

"All things are possible," added Potter when asked if Gyokeres will be loaned elsewhere or involved in Premier League football this season. "We have to make the right decisions around our squad and I think he can help our group and contribute.

"He will only get better as a player as well and someone who can help the group."

Potter changed all 11 players and the bench following the 3-1 Premier League loss to Chelsea. He was pleased with the display and attitude of his players against Portsmouth and believes it has lifted morale ahead of Sunday's trip to Newcastle.

Maiden goals for Gyokeres, Bernardo and Alexis Mac Allister will also give them a huge boost for the season ahead.

"It's really good (for their confidence). You can imagine they want to play and they want to play in the Premier League.

"They are pushing for places and their attitude has been fantastic and they have trained really well.

"They hardest part of my job is to pick a team and not play players because they deserve to play. They have been training well and pushing so really nice for them that they can get on the pitch and score.

"Their attitude has been great and they got their reward."
