Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side fell behind in the first half - with Danny Welbeck scoring against his former club - but goals from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood completed a second-half comeback.

However, that doesn't tell the full story. The game could have come to a very different conclusion if Albion were awarded a seemingly stonewall penalty when the scores were level.

Harry Maguire would have been relieved to see a very quick VAR check go in his favour after he appeared to foul Welbeck at the back post, as the forward looked destined to score.

Brighton fans were quick to voice their frustration on social media.

Here are just some of the comments from supporters on Twitter:

@wearebrighton: "Penalty not given for a small Premier League club away at Man United. Next you will be telling me the Pope isn't a Catholic. Absolute farce."

@jagers29: "If this isn't a pen, and isn't overturned by VAR, what on earth is the point of the whole system? He scores if Maguire doesn't pull back."

@Rikymilanista92: "It was a clever penalty. Shameful."

@GaviotaKev: "How is that not a pen? Only question is whether it's a yellow or red for Maguire."

@louisbarron16: "Embarrassing officiating. Accidental or not, that's a penalty."

@IanCollett: "How come? I could see that was a penalty all the way from Canada."
