The England international has fallen out of favour at Stamford Bridge since Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard in the dugout, and has been limited to just three Premier League appearances since the end of January.

Reports in recent days have suggested that the Blues could look to offload the player in the coming months, and would be seeking a fee of around £40 million.

With that in mind, Merson has argued that he could be a smart signing for the Seagulls.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday, the former Arsenal favourite said: “They [Brighton] need a forward.

"I like Tammy Abraham.

"If he went to Brighton, I’m looking at Brighton in ninth place.

"I like Ivan Toney [at Brentford] as well, but I’m looking at Abraham, and I know he’s proven. He did it at Aston Villa.

"I like Brighton. I like the way they play. If you’re leaving Chelsea, you’re not going to go to somebody who’s going to win stuff, so if you’re not going to win stuff, you’ve got to be going somewhere where you know you’ll be getting chances. You don’t want to go somewhere and be working on scraps.

"If he goes to Brighton, he’s getting at least 15 goals. They make chances – one of the best teams in the league for me, from box to box, without a doubt. They just can’t put it in.”
