With tickets sold out for the eagerly anticipated derby at the Amex Stadium in Falmer, Sussex Police and British Transport Police put additional officers on duty to help keep supporters and the public safe.

Police patrols were stepped up across the city, with extra officers also deployed on the railway network as fans travelled to the match.

Sussex Police had warned residents and visitors to expect congestion and travel disruption, particularly around Brighton railway station, and advised those travelling by road or public transport to allow extra time for their journeys.

A Sussex Police statement read: "The public can expect to see an increased policing presence in the city on Sunday for the Brighton v Crystal Palace match.

"This is to ensure that everyone attending the football match or watching it at venues in the city has a safe and enjoyable experience."

The force also reminded football fans that a Public Space Protection Order is in place for Brighton city centre.

Under the order, officers can seize and remove alcohol being consumed outside licensed premises, including alcohol from bottles and cans.

British Transport Police advised that additional officers would patrol the railway – to help keep supporters safe and reassure other passengers.

Passengers were advised to speak to officers if they had any concerns, and report anything suspicious by texting 61016.

The match brought thousands of supporters to the Brighton area for one of English football's most keenly anticipated rivalries.
