Kieran Trippier admitted he was relieved to come away from Brighton with a clean sheet and a point after a tough afternoon at the Amex Stadium last Saturday.

Brighton had the better of the chances during a hard-fought and entertaining 0-0 draw with the Magpies as Trippier and his teammates defended for large periods.

The England defender cleared off the line and goalkeeper Nick Pope was forced into a number of saves as Solly March and Pascal Gross both missed chances to claim the three points for Albion.

Trippier had his hands full throughout as Belgium international Leo Trossard gave the full-back a tough afternoon, before Albion sub Kaoru Mitoma came on for a lively cameo on his flank.

“Brighton are a difficult team to play against," said the former Spurs and Atletico Madrid man. “The way they overload the midfield – they had so many bodies there.

“It is a very good system the way they play but we knew we could also cause them problems.

“We did in the first half, but in the second half they had control of the game.

“So to come away from that with another clean sheet and a point shows the progression we are making.

“I was sloppy in the area one time when I got caught by Danny Welbeck, and we caused some of our own problems in that area.

“I didn’t get forward as much as I would have liked but is mainly about the defending.

“The one I cleared off the line, Popey got a little touch on it and I nearly scored an own goal. But as defenders you thrive off clean sheets so that was a good moment.”

Brighton remain unbeaten and have four points from their first two Premier League matches this season. They are next in action this Sunday at West Ham.
