Hayden was stretchered off the pitch after a bizarre and completely accidental collision with Albion midfielder Yves Bissouma.

Bissouma lost his balance and fell awkwardly on to Hayden's knee as he challenged for the ball.

Hayden looked in serious pain as he received treatment on the pitch and Bissouma was visibly distressed.

The Newcastle man was stretchered off the pitch and was replaced by Jeff Hendrick and shortly after Brighton took the lead through Leo Trossard.

Further goals from Danny Welbeck and Neal Maupay sealed a comfortable win for Albion.

Hayden is set for scans on his knee injury, which Bruce said “does not look good”.

“He will have scans over the next 24-48 hours and we hope it is not too bad.," said Bruce

With nine games left, under pressure Bruce accepts Newcastle are facing a difficult run-in to secure their top-flight status.

“We’ve got to dust ourselves down,” he said. “Hopefully we can get a couple of players back (from injury). We have been doing well of late, to a degree, but have to accept that tonight we were nowhere near good enough to get a result.”

Bruce added: “I’ve been in it (football) a long, long time. It is very difficult and we all know what is ahead of us. I hope I can rely on experience. We are still confident that we can get out of the situation.

“I will never give up that fight, that is for sure, and we will have to get ready for the challenge which lies ahead.”
