A brace from James Rodriguez and headers from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Yerry Mina sealed the win for the Toffees. However, Albion did look dangerous in spells, with Neal Maupay making it 1-1 in the first-half, after a Jordan Pickford mistake, and Yves Bissouma scoring a stunning consolation late on.

"Brighton is a team that likes to play," Ancelotti said. "They have a good balance.

"They are used to playing good football. We had to stop that.

"I think we defended well. We were focused when defending.

"After that, we had the opportunity to counter attack and we were really clinical."

The 4-2 win puts Everton on top of the Premier League after gaining maximum points from their opening four games.

Ancelotti said his side 'played a complete game'. He added: "From the start, we played very well.

"The attacking football was good. We were clinical in set pieces, good in counter-attack.

"When we defended in a low block, we were in a good position to defend well. I am pleased.

"[Pickford] did a mistake but we got three points. This is the most important part."

On his side's impressive start to the season, the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich manager added: "We're winning games, showing good quality and the spirit to score.

"It's only the start of the season. Now it's the International break. We can have rest, it's been a busy time.

"We have to come back with the same attitude."
