Nobody would have predicted Mat Ryan being as far down the pecking order as he is now at this point a couple of months ago, and even fewer could have foreseen him sealing a loan move to Arsenal.
The Australian is yet to make his debut for the Gunners, but already questions are being asked about where his long-term future lies.
And Mikel Arteta has made it clear that no firm decision has been made yet.
“At the moment it’s a loan deal, he still has a contract with Brighton and we will assess it – see how he performs, how he adapts, what we need in the future.
"It’s still too early to decide.”
If the 28-year-old is to convince his new boss that he’s worth a permanent contract he will have to look more assured than he did for Albion during the early stages of the campaign. According to Wyscout, he conceded 4.5 goals more than he should have based on his xCG (expected number of goals conceded).
Whether the Seagulls could be in line to pull off a shock move of their own remains to be seen, however.
Manager Graham Potter has kept relatively tight-lipped on his side’s recruitment ambitions, but his latest update may offer a small glimmer of hope to optimistic fans. When asked if he expected Albion to make any more signings in a press conference, he said: "I wouldn’t say expect, you never know.
"Our job is to always be ready, to adapt to what’s happening. If there’s an opportunity that comes along that we think as a club is a good opportunity, whether that’s short-term, medium-term or long-term, we’ve got a responsibility to do something.”
The most likely move that appears to still be in the offing is a swoop for Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo – a player described as “terrific athlete who is cool in possession” by South American football pundit Tim Vickery.
