It's only the second time in Brighton's history they have progressed to the quarters of the prestigious youth competition and they did so thanks to first half goals from Ferguson and Andy Moran.

Only the brilliance of Charlton's keeper Ahmed Kone prevented Albion from scoring further goals during an impressive performance at the Valley.

The young Seagulls were off to a flying start and took the lead inside four minutes. Jack Hinshelwood won the ball in midfield, Marcus Ifill helped it on to Ferguson who surged into the box and drove home a right-foot shot.

Kone pulled off a string of saves - twice denying Ferguson - but was finally beaten again in the 57th minute when Moran made it 2-0 with a composed finish into the bottom corner. Zac Sturge was the provider with a precise cut-back from the left.

Baxter said: "[It was] lovely to have Evan back. He has been around the first team and the under-23s.

"He is such a handful and an unbelievable No 9. He creates chances. But I thought our passages of play in and around him were really good.

"It's a great achievement from the players and staff to get this far. Performance wise I thought we did really well. We started really brightly and could have gone two or three up.

"Second half we spoke to the boys and said we wanted a bit more control of the game. We set a target of so many clean sheets in the next six games and that's another one for us today."

Albion will now travel to the winners of this weekend’s tie between Wolves and Tottenham. Their only previous appearance in the quarter-finals was in 2006 when they lost at Newcastle on penalties.

Baxter added: "Deep into the rounds now and they are all going to be difficult games. We don't mind the away days, it's another stadium to tick off for the boys."
