The veteran striker has seven Premier League goals from 17 appearances so far and is Albion's leading scorer in the top flight this term.

Welbeck is currently managing a lower back problem but hopes to be fit enough to start against West Ham at the London Stadium on Tuesday night.

The 35-year-old has helped to fill the void of Joao Pedro, and his importance has increased further at Brighton as Stefanos Tzimas is injured and Charalampos Kostoulas is still bedding in after his £30m summer arrival.

Georginio has also struggled this season, while Evan Ferguson was sent on loan to Roma.

Welbeck is out of contract this summer but there is thought to be the option of another season.

Hurzeler, speaking ahead of Brighton clash at West Ham, said: "We never speak about any personal situation of a player in the public.

“We all know how important Danny Welbeck is.

“He knows it, the club knows it so let's see what happens."

Hurzeler: We know West Ham are difficult

The Seagulls travel to the London Stadium to meet opponents lying five points adrift of safety after Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat by Fulham, their third on the trot.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men have taken just three points from the last 21 on offer, but one of them came from a 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium on December 7, when Brighton needed a last-gasp Georginio Rutter strike to claim a 1-1 draw.

Hurzeler said: “We know how difficult it is to beat them from the game at the Amex a few weeks ago. They proved it against Fulham on Saturday. I think they deserved to win this game and therefore we know that they will be a really tough opponent.”
