Chris Hughton says Dan Burn will provide valuable competition in defence for Brighton & Hove Albion.

The 26-year-old joined Brighton from Wigan in the summer but then returned on loan to the Latics for the first half of the Championship season.

He linked up with the Seagulls squad yesterday and the 6ft 7in defender will hope to push Shane Duffy, Lewis Dunk and Leon Balogun for a starting spot.

Speaking yesterday, Hughton said: "He is officially back with us.

"He's been our player since the summer but went back out on loan and comes into the fray. We look forward to including him in training.

"One plus with Dan is he is up with speed. He is fit, has been playing games which makes him very much available to the squad.

"He won't be in the squad (for West Ham), simply because today was his first day back today with the squad but he is fit and well."

Hughton added: "The reason why he came here was because of the form he showed at Wigan in the period of time he was there.

"Unfortunately for him, he picked up an injury early in the season and missed a series of games but he got himself back fit and up to speed.

"He was in good enough form at Wigan for us to purchase him in the summer and he had a spell at Fulham before that, so is a player of experience.

"He's a good size for a centre-half and it will be up to him but he's here for the challenge.

"From our point of view, we brought him in because of the quality he has shown and he will give us valuable competition in the centre-half positions."
