Caolan Lavery: I’ll make my name with Pompey

The striker completed a move three-month loan from Sheffield Wednesday yesterday.

Lavery bolsters Paul Cook’s attacking options, with both Jayden Stockley and Adam McGurk sidelined.

The 22-year-old has six goals from 39 appearances with the Owls and knows Cook from a loan stay at Chesterfield earlier this year.

He arrives at Fratton Park looking for the goals and appearances to build his reputation.

Lavery told Pompeyfc.co.uk: ‘I had offers from other places a lot closer to Sheffield and in higher divisions, but I know Paul and Leam (Richardson) very well.

‘Their ambition is fantastic, as is the way they like football to be played, and when you look at the size of this club I couldn’t say no.

‘I’d like to be part of the success that I’m sure Pompey will have this season and look forward to getting started.

‘At the age I’m at now, I need to be playing games, scoring goals and making a name for myself.’

Lavery is not a stranger to Pompey after he had a trial at the club as a teenager.

The Canadian-born striker, who has represented Northern Ireland at age-group level, moved on to Ipswich before arriving at Hillsborough.

He said: ‘I was here when I was 14 – quite a while ago. I came on trial for a few weeks but I wasn’t seen fit to be part of the Academy.

‘I went on to a few other places, have been in England since and now I’m here again.’
