Chappers ponders his future

It was still very soon after his side’s bitterly disappointing Trophy replay exit on Tuesday but Hillians boss Ian Chapman was seriously considering his future.

Speaking on the coach on the long journey home from Norwich, he said: “Again we were just too weak, both physically and mentally.

“My players, my fault so I need to look at what I’m doing because if I’m not doing it right, then I won’t continue.

“Week in, week out we have more possession but don’t make it count and are then punished at the other end. I can’t keep saying the same things to the players but need to sort it out because at the moment it’s not good enough.”

Chapman made two changes from the team that earned a last-gasp 1-1 draw on Saturday, bringing in Greg Luer and Paul Armstrong in place of Pat Harding and Curtis Gayler.

Hillians started well enough, with Saturday’s villain-turned-hero Spencer Slaughter shooting wide on nine minutes.

Scott Kirkwood was also off target with a fair chance before the visitors deservedly went ahead on 27 minutes as Danny Curd nodded on for Luer to finish powerfully from outside the box.

A minute later Luer had another chance but it needed a decent save from Alan Mansfield to deny Wroxham. It was only a short reprieve, however, as on 34 minutes Joseph Marsden equalised against the run of play with a long range free kick.

It could have been worse for Hill had Mansfield not saved brilliantly from the lively Stephen Drake two minutes later.

At the start of the second half the visitors again enjoyed good possession but failed to cash in, with Curd involved in much of the action.

And they paid a big price as on 69 minutes Marsden struck again with a long range free kick.

Four minutes later disaster struck as Remy Gordon made it 3-1 and not even an injury time strike by late sub Harding, who had already been denied by a linesman’s flag, could save the day .
