Chichester College footballers have plenty to celebrate

The win gave them the three points they needed to win the ECFA Southern region league and promotion to the highest level of college football for the 2012-2013 season.

The men’s first team sneaked a 1-0 win over Collyers at Lancing FC to win the Sussexs School’s League competition, the first time the college have won this competition for 17 years.

Tommy Lee-Smith converted a great free-kick from Tom Groom to put Chichester ahead after 11 minutes. Collyers had a great chance to level after 21 minutes when their centre forward was upended in the box by goalkeeper Austen Holden. Austen pulled off his eighth penalty save of the season to make amends, unfortunately the referee deemed Austen had moved off his line and ordered a retake. No problem for man-of-the-match Austen as he saved again.

Chances came and went for both teams, most notably for Chichester were Markie Gilberts stunning volley, which was saved superbly by the Collyers’ goalkeeper and Corey Heaths’ header from a well-worked corner routine, which some how ended up the wrong side of the post.

Chichester’s’ back four of Lovatt, Gilbert, Heath and Derry defended resolutely for the remainder of the game, protected well by Haulkham and Lynch, to keep a clean sheet and bring the cup home.

The Elite ladies won a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Sussex Downs to reach the final of the Sussex County Cup.

The scores were level at 3-3 after normal time with Chichester’s goals coming from Ellis and Wride (two). Extra time came and went scoreless.

Sussex Downs missed had their first two penalties, which were superbly saved by Mackinnon in the Chichester goal. Chichester scored their first two through Wride and Widdowson. Thoms stepped up to win it and missed, so the deciding penalty fell to the captain Elizabeth Ogden who made no mistake.

The second team picked up their first clean sheet and scored nine in the process, Rob Hayler with 5 and Ben Hands, George Kingoloupus, Cieran McGreal and Dan Kinch with one each.
