Common target magnificent seven

Common will go in search of a magnificent seven tonight (Friday) when they travel to Eastbourne United AFC in a difficult-looking Sussex County Football League Division Two fixture.

Player-manager Eldridge said: “The boys are not content with six; they want to keep on going. We’re full of confidence at the moment; that’s what winning does to you.”

Common have picked up 19 points from a possible 24 in total, while a sixth-placed Eastbourne side packed with higher level experience has taken 11 from 21.

In fact, Eastbourne have lost four and drawn one of their last five games in all competitions, but Eldridge knows Common will have to be at or near their best to continue their victorious run.

“I think every game’s a tough game to be honest, especially the run we’re on there’s that extra challenge for teams to shoot us down,” continued Eldridge.

“They’ve got some experienced players over there and I think it will be one of our toughest challenges so far. The most important thing for us is to keep that unbeaten run going. If we can get a positive result it will stand us in good stead.”

Whatever happens it should be entertaining because Eastbourne and Common are the only two teams in the division to have scored more than 20 league goals so far this season.

The match will also bring together the division’s two highest scorers in Eastbourne marksman Liam Baitup and Common hitman Jamie Crone, who have netted 20 league goals between them.

Eldridge admits he has some tough choices to make over his starting XI after shuffling his pack slightly for the 5-1 Sussex RUR Charity Cup success at home to Steyning Town last weekend.
