Crawley Down concede five goals at Sudbury

Crawley Down's growing injury list helped contribute to their biggest defeat of the season when they were beaten 5-0 by Ryman North side AFC Sudbury in the FA Trophy.

They set out for Suffolk without keeper Kieron Thorp with an injury, whose position was filled by Crawley Town youngster Jack Eden who is on a work experience registration.

Sudbury were soon in front after only five minutess when a long throw by Ben Lewis was headed home by Sam Clarke.

Down’s Tim Rivers was chopped down just outside the box, leaving Lee Carey to float his free-kick just over the bar.

Sudbury had a goal disallowed for an infringement and stand-in Down keeper Eden several times made several saves with his feet, knees and anything else to keep the home side at bay.

Not much was forthcoming upfront for the Anvils as Rivers was mostly out-fought by defenders as he ploughed a lonely furrow.

Centre back Charlie Holness suffered a hamstring injury and was replaced by Jamie Hills.

Lax Anvil defending let in Clarke to score his and Sudbury’s second goal.

After some great saves by Eden, a corner that was finally scrambled just over the line by Ryan Henshaw.

On the hour a Rivers cross found Ash Elson whose shot caused underused ‘keeper Alex Archer to flip over,

Bury went further in front when a Ben Thompson effort was first blocked only for the ball to run to sub Dave Cowley with a half-hit shot that rolled agonisingly over the line for 4-0.

More corners followed with Henshaw heading over and the final rites were tendered nine minutes before the end when substitute Ryan Swallow tapped home another corner,
