Tom Nichols’ second half goal – the Reds’ first of the campaign – helped the hosts beat the Gas and advance to the second round.
Here’s how reporter Ashley Adamson-Edwards rated the Crawley players after tonight’s excellent win.
9. Jake Hessenthaler - 9
Had a strong performance and showed exactly why he’s one of the first names on Betsy’s team sheet. The Reds needed intensity off the ball and Hessenthaler gave it. On the ball, he was calm and caught the opposition out with some sharp turns. Photo: Cory Pickford
10. Ashley Nadesan - 5
In their last game, Crawley desperately needed someone to bridge the gap between midfield and attack. As a centre-forward who has the ability to drop back and create, Nadesan looked to be the perfect addition to face the Gas. However, the number 10 was barely involved. There were times when his passion and quality were made evident but ultimately, his end-product wasn’t enough. Photo: Cory Pickford
11. Tom Nichols - 8
Crawley Town have been desperate for a goal since the season began and Nichols finally delivered. As the club current top scorer, the striker showed great awareness to pounce on his rebounded shot off the opposition keeper. The Reds had something to shout about at last. 12. Kwesi Appiah - 4
Crawley’s attackers have had little impact since the start of the season and Appiah was no exception to that rule against Bristol Rovers. Intensity on the ball is never a problem for the striker but when it came to threatening James Belshaw, the opposition goalkeeper, Appiah was poor. Photo: Cory Pickford
