He was brought back early because of an injury to regular keeper Tim Krul while on international duty for Holland playing against Kazakhstan in the European qualifiers.

Woodman impressed since joining Reds at the start of the season and played the first 12 games before missing their last two matches while on duty for England Under-19s.

He is expected to sit on the bench for Newcastle in their next Premier League game on Sunday against Norwich City because their reserve keeper Karl Darlow is also injured.

Woodman tweeted: “Thanks for all the messages, gutted to be leaving Crawley Town so early.”

A Crawley spokesman said: “We’d like to thank Freddie for his services and wish him all the best for his future. He’ll always be welcome back at the club.”
