Dominant Magpies fail to take a point off high flyers

Loxwood manager Mark Beard felt his side deserved at least in a point as they became the latest scalp of unbeaten Eastbourne Town on Saturday.

It was a case of only just, however, as Beard saw his side, who themselves had won 11 of their last 12 games, dominate the second half in the 2-1 loss at Plaistow Road.

Town led 2-0 at half-time through a Wes Tate penalty and Ben Billings goal, but the tide had started to turn in Loxwood’s favour before the break.

Beard said: “We didn’t start slow, but we just were not keeping the ball with bad errors. They were pressing us high and really confident as they are unbeaten. Everything we were doing well was unrecognizable from how we had been playing.

“Charlie Pitcher was getting frustrated and arguing with the referee having just been booked, so I brought Cecil Jee on after half an hour and things seemed to change with his energy and hassling them.

“From 35 minutes onwards we completely dominated the game and we deserved something out of the game as we peppered them for the second 45 minutes. I thought we were outstanding.”

After Aaron Capon went down in the box, Tate dispatch a spot kick past Sam Smith on 17 minutes to give his side the lead, before Billings added a second just before the half-hour mark as his shot looped in.

Town’s keeper Greg Nessling then performed a stunning reflex save from point-blank range to deny Tom Summerfield.

Loxwood came out on the front foot in the second half and soon all the questions were being asked of the Town back line.

Sam Beard, who picked up a second booking in the last minute, shot home through a crowd of players on 69 minutes after a forceful run from the left-hand side and despite plenty of balls into the box and Mark Cave and Ross Swaine going close, Loxwood couldn’t find a leveller.

Loxwood: Smith, Courtney (Simpson 85), French, Scally, Beard, Richefond, Summerfield (Holvey 60), Swaine, Cave, Wood, Pitcher (Jee 33).
