English football’s top division has agreed to an early payout of what is reported to be a five-figure sum for every club in the three divisions of the National League.

It comes as National League clubs vote on the league board’s proposal to declare the season finished and then decide whether to expunge results or work out final tables based on points gained per game.

Whatever is decided makes little difference to Borough – they were not destined to go up or down when fixtures were suspended a month ago.

The Sports described the Premier League payment – which is coming three months early – as a ‘crucial infusion’ of funding at a time when income had been wiped out by the restrictions in place as the pandemic continues to hit.

A statement by the National League said officials wanted to place on record their gratitude to the Premier League for an advance in its annual solidarity payments.

The PL unanimously voted to send the funds earlly

National League chairman Brian Barwick said: “I am delighted that the relationship between the Premier League and the National League remains so strong.

“We are very grateful the Premier League have advanced us monies to be able to distribute to our clubs in the coming days. It is a gesture that will bring welcome relief to many of the clubs in our league. It is appreciated.”

The move allows for some breathing space at Priory Lane.

Borough football chairman John Bonar added his thanks and said: “Funding from the Premier League is vital to clubs such as ours, and it shows that grass roots football is supported by those at the peak of our beloved game.

“The fact the funding has been brought forward by some months is a huge benefit to us, and it has lifted a weight from the club’s shoulders – enabling us, in effect, to move on from this phase of simply firefighting.

“It means we gain just a little breathing space, and we can start to plan the path ahead. We do not pretend that issues are miraculously solved, but we are working on all fronts and it is a great strength to know that, from the very top of the game, we are not forgotten.

“In sharing this message with supporters, I would like to end by wishing everyone well.

“Stay home, stay safe and we will all meet up on the other side.”
