Manager Matt Doran welcomed club captain Danny Bircham back to the team after a long spell on the sidelines through injury. Bircham and Ben Applin were reunited in defence.

As the half wore on Carvalho looked dangerous up front and the guile of Rob Brown alongside him and pace of Sam Carter and Ibraheem Nyang on the wings was starting to cause problems for the hosts.

Southbourne almost opened the scoring through a 25-yard effort by prolific scorer Tommy Hedgecock which was brilliantly saved by Lee Newell.

Brown gave the visitors the lead on the half-hour mark with a long-range effort.

The second goal arrived after 50 minutes when a lofted corner into the box was only half cleared, allowing Jake Parke to bundle in his second of the season.

Helder Carvalho scored the third goal for the visitors after being played through by Brown and finding the corner of the net.

AFC Southbourne kept on trying to play but Colts held firm. Prolific striker Dan McGovern was being well marshalled by Bircham and the experience of sub Guy Hunter thwarted Southbourne’s dangerous wing play.

Carter and Ibraheem Nyang went close and the fourth goal arrived with 20 minutes to play, Carvalho again timing his run perfectly to finish past the exposed keeper.

Sulayman Nyang and Adam Blythman came on and with the game over as a contest, Southbourne scored a scrambled consolation.
