Adam Hinshelwood was hoping to boost his squad ahead of Saturday’s National League encounter with Barrow – and those hopes have been realised.

On Saturday, Worthing drew 2-2 at AFC Fylde thanks to Razzaq Coleman De Graft 89th minute strike – his fourth goal of the season – leaving them 16th in the table with seven points from their first six games.

And when asked if the last minute goal can be a catalyst going forward, Hinshelwood said: “Yes, it has to be. We're doing all we can to bring some players in and to bulk the squad up.

"Obviously, we lost some players recently and it's taking time, but we're hoping by the time Barrow come to our place that we'll have some fresh faces in and just give the squad a bit of a boost, which we think it needs.”

And on Monday the club announced two signings in Charley Kendall and Jordan Young.

Striker Kendall had signed on undisclosed terms from Southend. The 25-year-old enjoyed a positive 18 month spell with the Shrimpers, where the striker contributed heavily in Southend’s FA Trophy success last May.

Hinshelwood said: “Charley is a real threat with his pace in behind and has that all-important National League experience which we want to keep adding to the group.”

Netting a double in the semi-final victory over Southport, Kendall also featured in the final showdown at Wembley as Southend overcame Wealdstone on a penalty shootout.

The Reds’ latest forward addition played a part in Kieron Dyer’s side’s strong start to the campaign, coming off the bench to net the winner in a 3-1 away victory over Solihull Moors just over a fortnight ago.

Born and raised down the road in Eastbourne, the striker experienced his football education at Queens Park Rangers, but it was with his home town club Eastbourne Borough where Kendall truly announced himself on the senior stage.

An initial loan spell in 2021 was made permanent in September with the Sports before Lincoln City swooped in January and secured his signature before loaning him back to the East Sussex outfit.

Kendall netted 24 times as a 21-year-old at Connect Management Stadium and earned a reputation as one of the county’s finest marksman.

Starting the 2022/23 season in League One with Lincoln, Kendall continued to develop through loan spells in League Two with Sutton United and the National League with Bromley.

Spells with Dagenham & Redbridge and Woking would follow, where the centre forward would register double figures for goal contributions in the National League.

Southend then won the race to lure the Englishman to Essex in December 2024, with his debut season including eight league goals in 28 appearances.

Over the years, Young has been a thorn in the Reds’ side, scoring and assisting in last year’s 3-2 defeat at Plainmoor while also netting an unstoppable free-kick in February 2025’s 2-2 draw at Woodside Road.

Last term, it was the third successive year our newest Rebel had reached double figures for goals, having netted 14 goals for Yeovil Town in the 2023/24 season prior to a 10 goal haul in his first year at Torquay and 18 strikes in total in the campaign just gone.

A player who doesn’t shy away from the big occasions, his 16 goals in the regular season was followed up with a brace in the National League South play-off semi-final victory over Dorking Wanderers back in May.

And highly-rated forward Young joined on a permanent deal from Torquay United, subject to FA approval. The versatile attacker recorded 30 goal contributions in 42 appearances in a superb season for the Gulls.

Born in Chippenham, Young has also turned out in the sixth tier for Chippenham Town and Gloucester City in the National League North and has featured in the National League for Yeovil.

He also briefly sampled life in League One with Coventry City as a teenager following a move from Swindon Town.

“Jordan is a player I have always admired when coming up against him, so I am delighted to now be working with him,” Hinshelwood said. “He has great dead ball delivery and can score and assists goals from out of nowhere, so he’s going to be a really important player for us.”
