Guy plots striker's permanent stay

The 32-year-old striker penned a new one-month loan deal yesterday after the Blues reached an agreement with his parent club Stevenage.

While the finances have now been agreed in principle for Agyemang to remain for the remainder of the campaign, Pompey can still sign players for only a month at a time.

But with the Pompey Supporters’ Trust taking another important step towards securing ownership yesterday, caretaker boss Guy Whittingham clearly has one eye on next season.

And Agyemang – who is out of contract and would be available on a permanent basis in the summer – would appear to be very much part of those plans.

Whittingham said: ‘The agreement (for Agyemang) is for the rest of the season. But as we know, we can do things only monthly, even though we’ve told Stevenage we want him until the end of the season.

‘The reason for bringing the likes of Pat and other players in was to have a look at them for next season.

‘It has given us a chance to see if they like us and we like them. But I think he has made a big impact for us and he is a good asset to us.

‘He has enjoyed his time here and he has enjoyed playing in front of our fans, I know that much.

‘He is looking forward to the rest of the season with us and hopefully he can kick on in the remaining games.’

As well as a contribution to his wages, Stevenage requested a loan fee of around £10,000 for Agyemang to remain at Fratton Park for a second month.

But Whittingham was not involved in the negotiations, instead leaving consultant Ken Brown to cut a deal.

‘I passed it on to Ken Brown and he did most of the hard work for us,’ said Whittingham.

‘I don’t know what was agreed. I just let him get on with it and he told me it was done so I was very pleased.’

Former QPR striker Agyemang netted his first goal for Pompey in last weekend’s 2-1 win at Crewe and looked unplayable at times, particularly in the first half when he scored one and made the other for David Connolly.

And Whittingham believes that is down to a combination of fitness and confidence.

He said: ‘He has got himself up to speed now.

‘Like anybody who has not been playing regularly, it takes a little while to get your sharpness back again.

‘I think he feels he is coming into a bit of form and wants to carry on in a similar vein.

‘They struggled to handle him at Crewe at times.

‘But the biggest asset any player has got is their confidence.

‘Like anybody in any walk of life, if you are confident in what you are doing, you are usually doing it well.

‘We’ve seen him getting more and more confident and now I’m looking to see more of that from him.’
