Harris keen to deliver goods for Blues

The Purbrook teenager insisted he is primed for an extended run in the first team as he readies himself for his next starting opportunity under Michael Appleton.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the attacking talent since making the breakthrough at his hometown club.

Harris has made one league start this season and been given six outings off the bench.

Incredibly, though, the 18-year-old has made the most Pompey appearances of any player currently on the books – 14 – since being given his debut against Birmingham in March.

Harris could provide an option up front as Pompey chase forward reinforcements, with Luke Rodgers sidelined.

But the fans’ favourite is hunting more playing time – wherever that arrives.

He said: ‘It’s going well for me.

‘I’ve just got to keep working hard and try to get in the team.

‘A lot of young boys dream of being a footballer but not everyone can do that.

‘It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and I’ve had the opportunity to do that.

‘I’m still young myself. I’ve not been around that long.

‘It’s happened very quickly for me, really quickly.

‘I got my debut when I was still in the youth team.

‘That’s quick and not everyone gets that opportunity.

‘So it’s all about me trying to take it now and improve my game.

‘Hopefully we can start picking up some more points.

‘The support is a bit unreal to be fair. I never thought I would get the support I have.

‘Every time I’m there [playing] and I hear the fans sing it feels weird – but I like it!

‘I want to play as much as I can. It’s opened up for me and I’ve been lucky enough to get there.

‘I’ve just got to wait for my chances – and hopefully they’ll come soon.

‘We are quite a versatile team so it could be anywhere.

‘We can play a lot of formations and don’t necessarily have to play two up top.

‘There are good players here with good ability who can play in a lot of positions.

‘I’m just trying to do all I can to improve and keep going.’

Pompey go in search of their maiden home league win against Scunthorpe this weekend. The Blues will also bid to end a run of three league defeats on the bounce at Fratton Park.

Harris is confident his side has what it takes to pick up a much-needed three points.

And he promised he isn’t feeling any pressure in front of the Fratton faithful to do that.

‘We’re still to get three points at home,’ said Harris.

‘This is a very good chance to do that this Saturday.

‘We’ll see what happens but I think we’ve got enough to pick up a win.

‘The fans are amazing, home and away, and hopefully they’ll lift us.

‘Maybe there is a bit of pressure because we are expected to win more games at home.

‘But it’s not something I feel. I don’t feel much in the way of pressure.’
