Harris makes goal short list

Ashley Harris is a contender for the League Football Education (LFE) goal-of-the-season award.

But the young Pompey talent needs supporters’ votes to pick up the honour.

Harris is aiming to seal a breakthrough campaign by picking up the gong for his goal for the Academy against MK Dons last September.

The outrageous overhead effort spoke of the talent the 18-year-old possesses, with the goal reminiscent of Trevor Sinclair’s bicycle-kick which won goal of the season in 1997.

Harris’ effort picked up the goal-of-the-month honour and means it has now been short listed for the best of the campaign in the Premier Academy.

With the voting already under way, Harris currently sits third behind Millwall’s Conor Wilkinson and Southend’s Jack Payne in the pecking order.

Harris has been joined by team-mate James Jennings, who picked up a nomination for his quality strike against Fulham – which grabbed him goal of the month in February.

LFE chief executive, Alan Sykes, said the monthly competitions had attracted strong interest throughout the season – and he expects this finale to be no different.

He said: ‘This competition has been a fantastic success once again this year with almost 30,000 votes cast during the course of the season.

‘I have no doubt this contest will be as competitive as ever and the quality of goals on show is a great advert for the work being conducted throughout The Football League to develop young players.’
