It was not without controversy – Worthing boss Nigel Geary described the key decision to send off Mavericks defender Dave Marsh as a ‘complete joke’ in their 2-0 loss at Chichester City.

Marsh was sent-off for violent conduct early in the second half with the score 0-0.

Geary said: “The referee said Dave punched their player but he’s never been sent off before and the decision was a complete joke.”

United played well in the first half against in-form City and had opportunities.

Aaron Tugnutt had a volley from Paul Elliott’s cross brilliantly pushed wide by Chi keeper David Hook before Tugnutt headed the resulting corner wide from close range.

Chichester’s main threat in the opening 45 minutes came from crosses into the area.

Marsh was red-carded by referee Lukasz Sipior and Chichester took the lead on 55 minutes. Kieran Hartley raced on to a long ball over the Worthing defence and fired past Mavericks keeper Fraser Trigwell.

Dan Hegarty doubled the lead on 65 minutes when he miscontrolled the ball but it rolled into the bottom corner.

Chichester sit eighth in the table as they head to Littlehampton on Saturday.
