The striker suffered the gash after a tackle during their 0-0 draw with league leaders Eastbourne Town last Tuesday.

The tackle happened after just five minutes, but Gault bravely played on for another 80 minutes.

We have received a picture from joint boss Phil Wickwar of the gash, but have not printed it as it may cause some upset or distress.

He told Middy Sport: “I knew it was cut as it bled through sock straight away.

“It wasn’t as painful as it looked but given that we were short of players I didn’t want to look at half time as had a feeling if I did then wouldn’t be able to continue.

“I was annoyed when I saw it as knew I would need stitches which meant a night in A&E and subsequently time off football and exercise.”

Gault added: “The tackle was fair but the player’s follow through was unnecessary.

“I was a little disappointed that the assistant referee didn’t pick up on it at the time although the game in general was officiated very well.”

The injury means Gault should be out for the Easter games against Pagham and St Francis Rangers.

He said: “Hopefully back within a couple of weeks but won’t know until sutures are removed.

“The team are working hard together more and have picked up some great results. There is plenty to improve upon on.

“Hassocks have some really good players and I believe with a clear direction and some further coaching the team could significantly improve as a footballing side.”

Joint boss Wickwar has also praised his side after three consecutive goalless draws.
