While the first half was level pegging, albeit with the woodwork twice coming to YM’s aid, the second was owned by Hassocks, who deserved their 3-1 victory.

The action began with debutant Cameron Gyeabour and Will Read shooting over for YM, Jake Chadwick doing the same for the Robins.

Referee D’Urso issued his first batch of cards before going on to put Paul Daniels to shame. After a visitors’ free kick hit the bar and skimmed off, Charlie Pugh in the Hassocks goal made a save before the upright assisted YM.

Harvey Enticknapp was downed in the box on the half-hour, Jack Troat giving YM keeper Aaron Jeal no chance from the spot. But YM equalised when a pinpoint Dean Carden cross was headed home strongly by former Ascot, Sutton and Walton & Hersham man Gyeabour.

Soon after the resumption, disaster struck for YM when an uncleared ball reached Charlie Pitcher, who volleyed it into the bottom corner to reinstate Hassocks’ lead.

Charlie Gee almost walked the ball in for YM, but Hassocks were bossing the game, and in the 60th minute Pitcher scored again.

YM were temporarily reduced to 10 men with Adrian Todd sin-binned, and chances for Gyeabour and Read went begging.

It was Hassocks’ first win at Gorings Mead since 2013. On Saturday YM seek to halt a run of eight straight defeats away to 14th-placed Steyning.
