In pictures: Pevensey Bay resident leads England over-75s to penalty shootout glory against Germany

A Pevensey Bay resident has led England over-75s to a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Germany in a commemorative rematch of the 1966 World Cup final.

Ken Pollock, 78, was at Wembley 60 years ago to see England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra time and lift the famous trophy.

And now the player-manager of the ‘Silver Lions’ has helped repeat the feat six decades on.

The match was played at Boundary Park – the home of Oldham Athletic – on Thursday, July 30 against a German veterans side.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher was also on hand to officiate the action.

After a tightly-battled 90 minutes ended 0-0, England did the unthinkable and beat Germany on penalties (3-2).

The Silver Lions side features players well into their 70s, some of whom have suffered from health issues including a quadruple heart bypass, a stroke and eye cancer.

Ken has previously stressed the importance of the team for men’s mental and physical health, but winning was always top of the agenda for the 78-year-old.

He said: “I was so proud of the team – not just the result, but the manner of the result.

“We played the contemporary football we have developed and practiced for such a long time and when it was really needed, it delivered.

“It was a great day, a great match and a great result.”
