The government’s announcements this week about how and when sport can return has offered clubs and players new hope of what lies ahead.

But moves to allow football to be played and fans to return to grounds came too late to save the current season for clubs like Bognor, Chichester City, Pagham, Selsey and Midhurst.

The FA has confirmed the 'curtailment' of the season for steps three (Isthmian premier) to six (SCFL division one). There is still talk of a shake-up for steps four to six which could see some step five and six teams promoted this summer.

For most of the clubs in the Observer area, the termination of this season will not affect where they will start 2021-22.

Bognor will remain in the Isthmian premier and Chichester in the Isthmian south east.

It is expected Pagham will stay in the SCFL premier and Selsey and Midhurst in SCFL division one - although those divisions could yet see changes if the steps four to six rejig goes ahead.

Away from football, team sports like rugby and hockey can also resume on March 29, along with outdoor sports like tennis and golf.

Chichester and Bognor rugby clubs are likely to be making plans to get players back together soon.

The RFU said of the March 29 announcement: “This is good news for the game and for players, coaches and volunteers across the country, who will once again be able to enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of being involved in team sport.

“We will work with DCMS on the Covid protocols for the community game, including the format of rugby that will be permitted.”

Gyms, leisure centres and indoor swimming pools can reopen from April 12 for individuals or single-household groups.
