And the Blues new boy promised the uncertainty surrounding the Blues played no part in his thinking as he weighed up a move to Fratton Park.

Ertl, who is likely to be on the bench at Crawley on Sunday, completed a deadline-day switch last week after training with Leyton Orient.

The 29-year-old was blown away by the chance to play for Pompey.

Ertl said: ‘As soon as I was told of the interest from Pompey it was a no-brainer for me.

‘I’ve been at Leyton Orient and kept myself fit while I waited for my chance. I knew the manager from when I was at Sheffield United but when the Portsmouth chance came it was a no-brainer.

‘It’s a fantastic place for me to play football.

‘It really is an honour for me to wear this badge and the shirt.

‘All the time I’m here I want to give everything.’

Ertl, however, endured a debut to forget as he scored an unfortunate own goal which was key against Oldham.

He is determined to quickly put that behind him and show why Appleton recruited his versatility.

And Ertl vowed the troubles around Pompey did not raise any doubts over making the move.

He said: ‘The manager didn’t have to convince me to join Portsmouth.

‘Everybody knows we’re in a difficult position.

‘But the gaffer has said we’re on the right track and I feel this, too.

‘He said he knew I’m versatile and can play in many positions.

‘There are many games in this competition and he needs versatility.

‘I don’t mind where I play. Wherever the gaffer wants me to play, I’ll be there.’
