SCFL Division 1

The Mavericks recorded their first win in any competition since October with an emphatic 4-1 victory over fellow strugglers Arundel on a cold and windy afternoon at Lyons Way.

The game started at a furious pace with both sets of players determined to win this proverbial “six-pointer”, and it was the visitors who almost opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Only a goal-line clearance from Dan Vassiliou saved the day.

At the other end, Mike Waller threaded an inch-perfect pass to striker Dan Hills whose shot was palmed away for a corner by the Arundel goalkeeper James Fernandez.

But it was Arundel, with the wind at their backs, who took the lead on the stroke of half-time when Jamie Ford slotted home following a fluent attacking move down the right flank.

The second half belonged to the Mavericks though. They showed more desire and commitment than Arundel, whose heads noticeably dropped after falling 2-1 behind.

Hugo Blacklaw-Taylor scored the equaliser with a clinical finish in the 60th minute, and Tom Butler made it 2-1, squeezing the ball home in the 72nd minute.

Dan Hills was then gifted a goal in the 81st minute, when, with all the time in the world, he passed the ball into the net, and substitute Nathan Williams completed the scoring from close range in stoppage time.

This was a much-needed victory for the Mavericks, who moved up two places. They battled, outpaced and outplayed an Arundel team who appeared relieved to hear the whistle.

Sevenoaks 2 Lancing 3

Isthmian south east

Lancing scored a late winner at Sevenoaks - seven days after beating Three Bridges by the same method.

It seems a long time ago since Lancing went five games without a win or a point and their resilience and strength of character, driven on by inspirational captain, Finn Daniels-Yeoman, who epitomises the never say die attitude which permeates the team, is providing a belief that they can survive their first season in a higher league.

Matt Daniel won an early penalty for the Lancers but his spot-kick was saved.

Against the run of play, Louis Collins put Sevenoaks one up as he exploited space just outside the six-yard box and plant a free header past Gregor Shaw.

On 57 minutes, a superbly flighted free kick from Darius Goldsmith was met by Harrison Parker who headed the ball across the face of the goal to Daniel who was able to nod it in to bring the sides level.

With just under 20 minutes to go Isaiah Corrie was brought down and Mo Juwara put Lancing ahead from 12 yards.

Sevenoaks got themselves back on level terms on 82 minutes though Ryan Palmer.

But Lancing have a never say die attitude these days and it paid off when Andrew Dalhouse showed good control before arrowing the ball from the edge of the box into the far corner of the net.

Montpelier Villa 1 Wick 2

SCFL division one

Third-choice goalkeeper Ryan Maskell rescued Wick even though opponents Montpelier Villa had THREE players sent off.

The shot-stopper known as Foxy turned in a wily performance to prevent the Dragons from dropping points at Lancing’s Culver Road ground.

The first Villa player to be shown a red card was goalkeeper James McKemey. He was dismissed in the seventh minute for picking the ball up outside his area and denying Wick a goalscoring opportunity moments after Conor Bull fired the visitors into a fourth minute lead.

Ollie Chick increased the advantage with a cracking effort from 20 yards but the hosts reduced the arrears through Jan Borowiak just before half-time.

The drama continued seven minutes after the interval when Villa centre-half Lateef Oladokun was dismissed for dissent – and winger Harvey Damario was sent off in the closing stages for shoving Chick in the face.

Valiant Villa kept plugging away and Maskell had to make three superb saves to secure maximum points.

“Our first choice goalkeeper Keelan Belcher has an ankle injury and back-up Nathan Brown is also unavailable so we called up Foxy and he saved us in a game spoilt by the dismissals,” said Dragons manager Lee Baldwin.

Maskell added: ‘I’ve been playing for Bognor side Unicorn reserves and have helped us reach a couple of cup quarter-finals, saving three penalties in a shootout the other week.

“I’ve been with Wick before and enjoyed it and was happy to help out in a crazy match.”

The game was played in tough conditions against an Ashford team who were unbeaten this season and top of the London & South East Women’s Premier League.

Worthing’s defending and approach to the game resulted in an outstanding win. Goals came from Gemma Worsfold and Rebecca Bell.

In the next round Worthing will host Dartford on February 27 (3pm). Next, Worthing visit Fulham this Sunday.

Yapton 1 Northbrook 3

West Sussex Div 2 South

Having played only twice since December 9, Northbrook retained their four-point lead in the table with a 3-1 win away to Yapton.

Yapton gave a spirited performance but their failure to break down a resolute defence often enough cost them.

Fran Walsh hit the Northbrook bar from 25 yards early on. Full-back Sam Madgwick shone for Northbrook, for whom Ben Rubano opened the scoring against the very strong wind only for Yapton to draw level shortly before half-time when Marcus Sanders set up Cameron Coe.

Goals in the second half from Josh Clarke and Hayden Briggs ensured victory for Northbrook. The nearest Yapton went to another was when Jamie Goord struck the bar with the final kick.
