Arsene Wenger has rounded on his critics in the press following his side’s opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa. The Arsenal manager felt his team had once again played out their opening fixture in a negative atmosphere because of criticism over the club’s lack of moves in the transfer market, having failed to secure the signatures of both Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez. After a summer in which Arsenal failed to recruit anyone other than a young French striker on a free transfer - he stayed on the substitutes’ bench throughout - this was not even the same old, same old. It was worse than that. Arsene Wenger’s side were beaten by Aston Villa for only the third time in 30 meetings and many of their supporters in a 60,000 crowd decided that the fault, in a close contest between Wenger and the referee Anthony Taylor was just about equally divided. There might be a new man at the helm but it turned out to be the same old Manchester United as David Moyes’ men cruised to victory over Swansea in his first competitive game in charge. The combination of a troublesome ankle injury and the headline-grabbing antics of Luis Suarez meant that Daniel Sturridge has spent much of the summer in the shadows. This, then, was his opportunity to step out into the light and he seized upon it with a magnificent opening-day goal that served as a reminder of his talents and, more importantly, got Liverpool off to a winning start.
