Mansfield Town have issued a hands-off notice to Swindon Town this afternoon after an official approach to speak to former Crawley Town boss Steve Evans about the vacant manager's chair at the County Ground.

Swindon, newly-relegated to League Two, were rumoured to be interested in Evans last week and bookies had him in their top five in the odds.

Stags said no approach had been made at that time, but the Robins confirmed their interest today by making an official approach which was turned down by Stags chairman John Radford.

Radford said: “Steve is fully committed to Mansfield Town Football Club and we will allow for no distractions as we set about our work to mount a serious promotion challenge in 2017/18.

“I have refused Swindon Town permission to talk to our manager, who is under contract at One Call Stadium, and work continues behind the scenes at our club as we put together a squad which we believe will be highly competitive in Sky Bet League Two next season.
“Steve has my full backing ahead of next season as we aim to fulfil the dreams of a town and its people.

“There is a tremendous buzz around One Call Stadium right now as we build for next season.

“I encourage the people of the county to back Steve and his soon-to-be new look squad by purchasing a season ticket for 2017/18, which have already been very well received by our supporters.”

Evans led Crawley to two promotions from the Conference Premier as champions to League 2 in 2011 and then got them up again to league 1 in 2012,

He then gained two more promotions with Rotherham in 2013 and 2014 to lift them into the Championship.

His next job was at Championship giants Leeds United before joining Mansfield in November 2016.
