He said: “I thought we were great today. How many shots has Paul Jones saved? Two or three in the whole game. They are a good side with big expectations.

“They have won their last four and we have done the double over them!

“Yes, they overloaded us wide. We were superb, we stood really strong and had the best three chances of the game and with the goal we deserved our win.

“I have been leaving players off the bench and I’m leaving some quality out of the team, and that’s what we’ve needed all season.”

“Give us competition for places and I can do something with the team. Walts (Simon Walton) wasn’t happy at not getting straight back into the team, but I thought our players deserved it from their performances against Newport and Morecambe.

Luton are a good side, you could say they are on a high because a new manager’s come in and had an impact and by all accounts has raised their tempo. They are a fluid team and we had to deal with that.”

Yates was pleased with the balance to his side and believes his side were a threat, despite their opponents dominating possession.

He said: “There’s a balance about this time at the moment and although we had to defend, I thought we carried a threat and that was really pleasing.

“We’ve come here with a gameplan and played as we have done the last couple of games: we were aggressive, competitive, we’ve been hard to beat, hard-working. and played a bit of football at times.

“I’m really pleased with the group at the moment. Once we scored it makes you defend a yard or two deeper but I didn’t think they caused us that many threats.

“It shows if we have the right ammunition we can take the club forward.

“With the desire we showed at home and today counts for so much.”
