MID SUSSEX FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Overwhelming success in Sussex Intermediate Cup

There was overwhelming success for Mid Sussex clubs in the Sussex Intermediate Cup as Ditchling, Willingdon Athletic, Jarvis Brook and Lindfield advanced in their ties with three of the four matches being decided by a penalty shootout.

Premier Division’s Willingdon Athletic also defeated West Sussex Premier opposition to beat Nyetimber Pirates 5-­3 on penalties after goals from Henry Brunsden, Alastair Thompson and Daniel Weston took the cup tie into extra time. Jarvis Brook also shared six goals before winning their tie 4-­1 on penalties with East Sussex Premier Division side Peche Hill Select. The only match to be decided in the ninety minutes was the all Mid­Sussex clash as Premier Division’s Lindfield destroyed Championship side Lindfield 7-­1 .

Montgomery Challenge Cup

Lawrence Morley’s double and a Matt Blake strike saw Premier Division’s Copthorne edge past Championship side Barcombe in the Montgomery Challenge Cup second round and will either play fellow league rivals Buxted or Lindfield in the Quarter­Finals.

Senior Charity Cup

Premier Division’s Peaceheaven United thrashed struggling Championship side Sporting Lindfield 6-­1 in the first round of the Senior Charity Cup and will face AFC Varndeanians II in the next round.

Premier Division

Balcombe have regained top spot in the Premier Division with a 2­2 draw against Smallfield who continue their unbeaten start to the season to remain seven points off the lead although they still have two games in hand.

AFC Varndeanians II climb into fifth position with a 3­2 win against Buxted after two goals from Charles Miles and another from Charlie Young while two second half strikes from Paul Barnes saw Rotherfield comeback to secure a 3­-2 victory over Forest Row and rise to tenth place.

Cuckfield Rangers moved off the bottom of the table after a goalless draw at eighth placed East Grinstead United.

Dormansland Rockets are two points clear at the top of the Championship after Phoenix United 9­1 with the leaders having scored 22 goals in their least three league outings.

Simon Bristow’s hat­trick helped AFC Haywards with a 4­0 victory over Furnace Green Rovers to remain second just two points behind the leaders.

Two first­half strikes from Matthew Akehurst secured fourth place for AFC Ringmer with a 2­-1 win over Ashurst Wood in fifth while Cuckfield Town claimed their first victory of the season as they edged past Framfield & Blackboys United in a five­goal thriller.
