Craig Conway finished his loan spell with the Seagulls in impressive form as his corner was met by Ashley Barnes, but the in-form forward could only rattle the post with his attempt. Conway then teed up David Lopez to fizz an effort at goal but Aston Villa loanee Shay Given was able to collect.

Boro had chances themselves, the best of which was a rifled effort from distance which stand in goalkeeper Peter Brezovan clawed round the post.

George Friend’s dangerous ball across goal had the potential to trouble the visitors but Upson was on hand to clear and he was also in positioned well enough to steer Carayol’s smashed delivery soon after.

Then, with four minutes remaining, he headed a Conway corner into the floor which then bounced up into the net to hand Albion all three points and move them up to eight in the Championship table.
