Wick boss Lee Baldwin felt his side had the better of the first half but two mistakes early in the second period left them 2-0 down by the hour.

Elliott Wood headed home at the back post for Newhaven’s opener on 53 minutes, before Oliver Davies made it 2-0 six minutes later.

Kyle Woolven added a third for the hosts on 75 minutes, before Charlie Williamson’s stunning 25-yarder got a goal back for Wick three minutes later but Newhaven held on to progress.

Baldwin said: “In the first half we played really well and were the better side but two individual mistakes gave them their first two goals.

“The boys were gutted afterwards as they knew they’d put in a good performance but there can only be so many times that you see encouraging signs without getting a result.

“It makes Saturday at home to AFC Uckfield a big one now.”

WICK: Boughton; Williamson, Garnett, Madden, Bingham; Noble, Weir, R.Brown, Chick; Hardwell, Hutchings. Subs: Playle-Howard (Bingham 60), Gromett (Hardwell 65), Rose, Baldwin, Hallett.
