Mullets fight back to take all three points

ARUNDEL Football Club picked themselves up from defeat in their first game of the season to deservedly win 3-1 against a much-fancied, but seemingly under-par Worthing United side at Mill Road on Tuesday night.

After a 5-3 defeat at Shoreham in their opening game, Arundel had to do things the hard way against United.

They conceded with only three minutes on the clock as the industrious Wayne Joseph crossed from the right, only for the unfortunate Dave Hall to deflect the ball into his own net past the flailing James Fernandes in the Mullets goal.

After a frenetic first period, perhaps it was expected that the second half was a more sedate affair, although Dan Turner should have doubled United’s lead in the 58th minute, with his chip all too easy for Fernandes.

After 73 minutes, substitute Jerry Manning’s superb through ball found Dave Herbert, who poked softly beyond Andy McCarthy to level the scores.

Mullets then took the lead in the final minute of normal time as Nathan Da Costa jinked his way down the right wing and pulled the ball back to Liam O’Connor, who rifled into the top left-hand corner.

The Arundel cake was iced in the second minute of stoppage time when Herbert once again evaded his markers on the left, cut inside and drilled under McCarthy to seal the points.

Arundel boss Brett Torode was delighted with his side’s win and said: “I thought the boys showed a lot of character to come back after Saturday and then conceding right at the start.”
