Mullets were deep in relegation trouble at the turn of the year, sitting in the bottom three with a bleak outlook owing to major flooding at Mill Road.

Despite this – and overcoming the fact they have had to play a number of their home games away – they have produced a sparkling run to better their 14th-placed finish last season.

Butler said: “To finish higher than we did last year after the season we have had, myself and Craig (Stuart – assistant) are really made up we have managed to do that.

“With the year we have had at the club, with playing away and having so many games at the end of the season, it’s been tough, but we have managed to get there.

“With the under-18s and reserve team, we have managed to get there by dipping into there sides and calling some of them up. Some of the performances from the youngsters, I am quite excited about and they have not looked out of place when they have played.

“When you look at the way Rye and Sidley have gone, we must have been prime candidates for that as well.So it’s superb what we have achieved and there has been no moaning from the players about money or anything, they are here for the club.”

Arundel ended with a 3-1 win over Hassocks on Saturday. See this week’s paper for a match report and pictures.
