Munday resigns as Bexhill manager

Marc Munday said it's '˜the right time for me to step away' after choosing to end his two-year reign as manager of Bexhill United Football Club.

Munday stepped down after Bexhill completed their 2015/16 Macron Store Southern Combination Football League Division One season at the weekend.

He said: “I was given the opportunity to take the club on again next year, quite a while ago and confirmed three weeks ago at a meeting with the chairman (Bill Harrison), but personally it’s the right time for me to step away.

“I will still be around the club and maybe in the future I might be back in some form. I hope they go on and do well.”

Munday’s resignation may come as little surprise to a lot of people given how outspoken he has been in recent weeks over issues such as a perceived lack of commitment on the part of certain players.

And it’s a decision he said he’d been considering for some time, in fact since as far back as the local derby defeat at home to Little Common on December 28.

“I’ve been thinking about it,” he continued. “Probably one of the things that put it into the forefront of my mind was just after the Boxing Day game. I thought ‘we’re not going to be challenging; is this what I want’?

“There’s a lot of things that made my mind up; the commitment of players, which I’ve spoken about previously, and to a certain extent the ambition of the club. If I’m involved with football, I do want to be successful.”

Munday spoke in positive terms about his time in charge of the club, however, and singled out off-the-field figures Graham Cox, Mark and Pauline Killy, and Metin Dogrucan for special mention.

“I’ve had a great two years there,” Munday went on. “I look at the two seasons together. I’ve been pleased to be part of what Bexhill have achieved; playing in the FA Cup and FA Vase, which they’ve not done before, and especially last year a side that was challenging more or less to the end.

“I will always support the club and I love the club to bits. There’s a lot of people involved with the club that do a fantastic job.

“Graham works so hard at the club in doing so many different jobs and he’s been a pleasure to work with. The Killys have been a fantastic support to me and no matter where we’re playing, the first thing the players see when they step out on the pitch is the Pirate flag - it gives everyone a bit of a lift. People don’t realise the support Metin gives to the club; if the club needs anything, he’s there.”

Bexhill finished sixth in the league last season having been in contention for a top three place for much of it, but they came fourth-from-bottom this term after finishing with eight straight defeats. They also accrued 11 red cards in 2015/16.

Munday added that he feels he’s still good enough to play at senior level, but has no intention of signing for any club in particular.

“I’m concentrating on home life,” he said. “Some of the people who do it year in, year out - like Russell (Eldridge, Little Common player-manager) - I have a lot of respect for because it (management) is a hell of a commitment and it’s a stress sometimes you don’t need.”
