The 35-year-old, who has already scored six league goals this season, penned a new deal until the summer of 2020.

Murray scored his 100th goal for Brighton last month and is 23 short of the club's all-time record goalscorer Tommy Cook.

Speaking about the new deal, he said: “It means a lot that the club has shown another year’s faith in me. I just want to carry on in the form I’m in at the minute and continue scoring goals at this level for Brighton.

“I don’t think at any stage of my career I’d have believed I would be getting another contract in the Premier League at this age, but you just never know what can happen in football.

“That’s why you’ve got to remain professional, try your best and keep striving forward. It’s very nice to have the security, especially when my family are based here, that’s a big thing for me.

“It wasn’t something I was losing sleep over, I was fully focused on the season as a whole and trying to keep Brighton in the Premier League.

“But it’s nice to put the next year to bed and know that I’ll be here at the club, hopefully playing in the Premier League again.”

Murray added he will never lose his hunger for scoring goals and said: “I don’t think my hunger in front of goal will ever dwindle - even when I’m very, very old. I think I’ll still celebrate scoring goals in the back garden with the kids when I’m retired!

“I believe I deserve this and obviously the club feel exactly the same, otherwise they wouldn't have rewarded me with a new contract. My form has got a part to play in the circumstances.

“If I remained professional, trained well, played well and did the right things on the field, even if the goals weren’t coming, I still believe the club would have given me this contract."
