No immediate rush for a new manager at Whitehawk

Hill left his post as Hawks manager yesterday following 15 games in charge after being offered a position on Championship side Aston Villa’s recruitment team.

Alan Payne and Ben Strevens have been placed in temporary charge and guided Whitehawk to a 1-0 FA Trophy third-qualifying round replay victory at fellow National League South side St Albans City last night.

Thornton revealed that was the best he has seen Hawks play in six games and is no rush to appoint a new manager.

He said: “If we continue to play like that then we’ll have no problem. The performance was the best I’ve seen in six games and hopefully we can pick up some points in the league now.

“We’ve placed both Alan and Ben in temporary charge for at least a month. Alan is a wily old fox, while Ben is a younger guy who learned from Richard and will continue to do so with Alan now.

“Here at Whitehawk, myself, board members and everyone involved wants this club to go higher and it is important we don’t rush into a decision with regards to a new manager.”

Having guided Hawks to seven victories in his 15 games in charge, Thornton thanked Hill for his services. He added: “It’s a great shame Richard has decided to leave and he’ll be a big loss.

“Here at Whitehawk we don’t like to stand in anyone’s way if a better offer arises and in this case that is what happened.”
