Norris' last-gasp cracker earns Pompey derby point

David Norris' last-ditch strike ensured Pompey snatched a dramatic 2-2 draw in a pulsating south coast derby at St Mary's.

The Blues appeared to have been dealt a killer blow as Billy Sharp pounced to poke home from close range to put the home side 2-1 up in the dying minutes.

But Norris then had the final say deep into stoppage-time with a sweet volley to send the travelling Pompey fans wild.

In a cracking game, Southampton took the lead in the 27th minute as Sharp produced a cool finish following some sloppy Pompey defending to give the home side the advantage.

But Chris Maguire levellled matters with a suberb long-range strike from an acute angle that flew into Kelvin Davis’ top corner to make it 1-1 at the break.

Pompey looked far more composed after the interval and began to string some decent passages of possession together, as Maguire wasted a great opportunity.

But the Blues were also thankful to two outstanding saves from Jamie Ashdown, firstly, denying Adam Lallana and then Jose Fonte within a few seconds of each chance.

As the game appeared to be heading for a 1-1 draw, Southampton appeared to have stolen the points at the death in a controversial moment with Sharp tucking home.

Even though the lineman raised his flag for offside, referee Neil Swarbrick overruled his assistant and gave the goal.

But Pompey then raised themselves for one last effort and Norris sparked delirium among the travelling fans with a classy left-foot volley that ensured it was honours even.
