Thomas Tuchel made Barry his assistant after the German’s appointment as Gareth Southgate’s replacement. Tuchel’s appointment has divided opinion as the FA have opted for a foreign manager for the first time since Fabio Capello.
Elliot, who was born in England but qualified for the Republic of Ireland through his father’s family, played with Barry at Accrington Stanley when the former Newcastle keeper was on loan from Charlton.

He said: “Half my family are English, half are Irish. It’s an interesting one, I don’t have too much opinion on it to be honest. A friend of mine, Anthony Barry, who I played with at Accrington Stanley has gone in as assistant. I know what he will bring and what it will mean to him.
“I am really pleased in that sense, that Anthony Barry is getting a chance. He is one of the best young coaches around so I am hoping for him, and for England’s sake, it goes well.”
Barry, 38, has been an assistant manager at Wigan, Chelsea, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Portugal and Bayern Munich. He worked with Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern.
